SKATEOLOGIST LEITH MACEWEN
Leith MacEwen is the resident skateologist with many years experience with figure and hockey skates. While the goals for good sharpening are quite easy to quantify, skate sharpening is a manual operation and as such is very much a "craft". If you have ever watched Leith sharpen skates you will quickly see he makes it an "art". Leith works with each skater on a one to one whenever needed. He listens to each skaters concerns and will go to the rinks and try to correct any problem they are having with their skates, (hockey or figure).
Leith believes that it is extremely important to have the contour checked on your hockey skates.
Blades are mostly mounted by robots and 85% of skates over size 5 have blades that are contoured differently.
Let's say you play defence and your skates are contoured for forward position, this means that you are leaning too far forward to play your position correctly. The same goes for being a forward and if they are contoured for a defence, you will be standing to upright and you will struggle to bend your knees and lean forward.
If the blade on one foot is in forward position, and the other foot is in the defense position, you will constantly be trying to find your balance. The mechanics of your body cannot adjust quickly enough to move your centre of gravity forward on one foot and defense on the other foot. One foot will work and the other foot will slide.
On The Edge PEI is continually trying to help the figure skating clubs with the ongoing issue of raising funds. We give back one percent of sales to each club. Don't forget to register your club today.
Drop off box for hockey skates is located in Kensington at the SaveEasy customer counter and the turn around is 24 hours. This is a Monday to Friday pickup at 10:00 AM.
